Lost in deep space:
conversations

From 2013-2025, the Octavia E. Butler Literary Society hosted a blog on its website, posting announcements and calls for papers, allowing members and special guests to write blog posts, reflections, and book reviews. Those archives can be found here.

Founding a literary society is a daunting task. While there are many people who are scholars, critics, and fans of the work of Octavia E. Butler, you have to ferret out the ones who are willing to sacrifice their time, talent, and money to build a network.  Then you have to convince them this is the network.

Next you have to build a society that occupies at least two dimensions. One dimension must provide for the academic. Thus, you have to strive for a newsletter which you plan to morph into a journal, keep active in the call for papers and panels, and eventually create a publication. The other dimension must satisfy the needs of independent thinkers and writers. They too will need a newsletter which will morph into a journal, and spaces in which to publish their creative endeavors. Both will want memorials to Butler in the form of prizes and eventually scholarships.

Founding a literary society is a daunting task, but one which follows Butler's example. Butler's society must create a multidimensional space, a place for everyone who loves her work. This task is daunting, but it is possible, it is right, and it is ours. Join now and help us shape this change.
