The mission of the Society is to:
- Preserve Butler's Literary Legacy: Encourage the teaching of Octavia E. Butler's works in academic settings and support other scholarly engagements that promote her literary legacy.
- Foster Critical and Cultural Engagement: Create a space for critical and cultural engagement with Butler's works across all disciplines and boundaries. Facilitate conversations and collaborations between academics and independent scholars interested in Butler's contributions.
- Transmit Relevant News : Publish a newsletter highlighting research, discussions, and developments related to Octavia E. Butler, speculative fiction by writers of color, and Afrofuturism.
- Offer Educational Resources: Provide resources and support for educators teaching Octavia E. Butler's works, including lesson plans, reading guides, and academic materials.
- Award Book Scholarship: Award a book scholarship to students who are actively engaged in studying and working on projects related to Octavia E. Butler's writings.
